5 Charleston Cheap Eats Reviews in 5 Minutes

Long ago, while on the search for a few hard to find ingredients, I found this little place tucked in a dingy Asian market, in a strip mall long past its expiration date. Having heard of, but never tasted Pho before, I decided to take a seat in the very plain, outdated dining area and order a bowl...it was love at first bite. The thin sliced beef, the noodles, the fresh herbs and veggies...all swimming in this little pool of hot, delicious broth. I was forever changed. Well...maybe I'm being a little dramatic, but I do love Pho. There are other places in town where you can get it, but this is the go-to spot for me.

The Early Bird Diner - West Ashley
Diner done right. This place is everything a diner should be; delicious diner food with fresh, simple ingredients. My girlfriend and I come here at least once every couple of weeks and it's our go to spot if we can't decide on where we want to eat. I usually eat off the menu, but they're always putting out new daily specials if I decide I want to change things up. The chicken and waffles are what they're famous for, but my favorites are the shrimp po boy and the meatloaf. The mac and cheese is excellent and they make an awesome shrimp and grits. The service is always great and I love seeing the local art on the walls. If you're a local and you haven't tried this place, put down the crack pipe and come get some of the best Charleston has to offer.

Bon Banh Mi - Downtown

Mi like…mi like it a lot. I used to live right down the street from this little Spring St. gem and only wish it had come sooner, so that I could come more often. Fresh, locally made baguettes, quality ingredients and Orangina…need I say more? The five spice pork sandwich with a little sriracha and fish sauce would be in serious contention for my death row meal.

Charleston Burger Company - West Ashley
Tucked on the corner of Bees Ferry & 61, this place is a little out of the way, but a favorite spot to take care of that sudden burger craving...or a Sunday hangover. The bun and vegetables are fresh and crisp and the burger is properly cooked and seasoned every single time. The fries are excellent and the portions are enormous. You can go crazy with all of the toppings they offer, but I stick to the "All American" and have never been disappointed. Two thumbs up.

Fire Street Food - Downtown

Strolling down King, you might miss it, but you do so at your own expense. This little joint churns out delicious Asian fare at a price that you’d expect to find much further away from the designer shops and expensive eateries this side of Calhoun. Chicken w/ noodles, pan fried dumplings, sushi rolls, & grilled meat skewers are just a few of the dishes on offer. Expect the food to come out as fast as you order it and the service & atmosphere to be friendly and welcoming. Next time you’re in the mood for a quick bite, keep your wallet, and your belly, full and give this place a visit.
